2016 Trips Calendar

 

Getaway 4WD is a small Club, and trips are volunteered throughout any year.  We 'aim' to run a trip or event per month, but not every month 'gets' a trip.

Trips and events are posted on this site as soon as they are 'laid' on the Club table.

 Getaway 4WD Club will be out and about Visiting:


Dec - Jan       Baxters Cliffs         27 December 2016 to 8 January 2017

Travel to Madura and follow the Old Telegraph Line back to Israelite Bay and via the Baxter Cliffs, giant Bilbunya Dunes, Toolina Cove, and drive along the beach to Israelite Bay. Then travel the area between Israelite and Balladonia exploring the various old homesteads before exploring the old Balladonia telegraphic track back to Norseman then to Perth. Note - Itinerary may change depending on conditions.

May        Star Gazing at Star Place Observatory Gingin         28 and 29 May 2016

 Enjoy an evening with the stars. Formerly known as Gingin Observatory, Star Place Observatory allows:

‘Visitors get to experience the wonders of space by interacting with our astronomers, being out and under the clear dark night skies and see the highlights of our Universe.’

We will be camping in the district overnight and fees are payable for both camping and the observatory – details to follow.

April         Power Line Track -  Mundaring       2 April 2016

Travel the power lines in the afternoon. At the other end have a break and some tea then return along the power lines in the dark.

March/April            Central Australia Big Trip            25 March to 3 April 2016

Trip to be undertaken in two parts; participants can elect either or both. Part 1 will include Great Central Road sights including the spectacular section between Giles and the Olgas. Then we will spend time at Uluru and Yulara.

Part 2 will see us moving direction Alice Springs via the Mereenie Loop Road, Kings Canyon, Gosse Bluff, Palm Valley and other iconic destinations.  Overall duration for parts 1 and 2 will be approx three weeks.

February     Club Visitors - Mundaring Day Out       28 Feb 2016

This trip is restricted to Visitors who signed up for a Club 'get to know you' trip at the last 4WD show. Travel to Mundaring Weir for morning tea at South Ledge. Travel back to the northern side and enter the national park to the West. Trip should end approx 3:00pm.

This overnight camp will be at Congelin campground. Toilets and BBQ facilities are available; check out the link at: http://parks.dpaw.wa.gov.au/site/congelin-campground. BBQs are available.

2015 Trips Calendar

  

 April            In the footsteps of David Carnegie            3 - 11 Apr 2015

Explore the desert country around Lake Wells Station seeking David Carnegie sites up the Lake Wells Road towards Peterswald Hill then following a wheel pad across to Empress Spring and other sites in the area, then return to Perth.

This trip is not for the faint-hearted - vehicles will need to be fully self contained for one and a half weeks and have high clearance. At least 1000 kms fuel range is mandatory as are two spare wheels, a spare tube or two, and a good stock of repair gear for the rubber bits on your vehicle. Some cross country travel (ie not on tracks) may be involved.

 May          Wooroloo Getabout Day Trip        3 May 2015

This will be an easy to moderate drive though the forests and back roads of the Wooroloo Topo area. A good mix of roads and tracks, some rocky, some smooth, some steep. Will stop and wander around some nice lookout areas;  a pleasant way to spend a Sunday and not too far from home.

 August          Jo Clews - Camp-oven Cooking Demo Overnighter        1 - 2 Aug 2015

Jo Clews is a well-known 4wdriver, bushie, Western Australian food writer and author.  Her book “Jo Clews Australian Camp Oven Cooking” has been widely endorsed by the 4WDing and camping community.  
 
The overnight trip is designed so that Jo will greet us on arrival at Walkaway, Geraldton with a tasty treat before sharing her knowledge with an evening demonstration of a specific recipe from her cookbook. The group will then share that as our evening meal.

We will be camping on Jo’s bush block and there is a 'bush' toilet on the site. You will need to be self-contained.

August            Toodyay 4WD Workshop            22 - 23 Aug 2015

Trip will be located on a Toodyay farm. This will be a social weekend with some training sessions, with lots of 4 wheel driving.

The 4 wheel driving will be as easy or as difficult as desired! There'll be plenty of opportunity to watch others tackle the more difficult stuff and then decide to try or not. This is a great place to practice driving steep descents and ascents.

Join us on an overnighter, visiting New Norcia on the way. Enjoy fine food and great company on the hay bales at a Calingiri secret spot.

 Visiting Bungalbin Hill, Helena Aurora Ranges and Marda Tank area. Although the trip is rated moderate, if rain falls then the rating might be slightly altered to 'difficult'.

January - Australia Weekend at Preston Beach       25 -27 January 2014  

Details to be finalised but will include a BBQ on the Saturday evening, fishing competition and prize, and a day run.  

 


 February -  Mundaring Powerline Run    10 Feb 2014

Day trip.  Heading west along Mundaring Power Lines track and meet York road. Have lunch somewhere along the track.

March - Southern Adventure      1 - 3 March   2014

We will be taking a leisurely drive down to the Pemberton area, to explore forest tracks and perhaps even a look at Yeagarup Beach via the dunes depending on time. We will have a static camp, campfire and communal meal. The 4 wheel driving will be of only moderate difficulty with a few scratches.

April - Weowanie and Beyond    18 - 21 April 2014
 

Travel to Weowanie Rock looking for, hopefully locating some Geocaches and Confluence Points enroute.  Camp the first night North of Weowannie.  Moving on over the next two days to explore parts of the Gus Luck Trail, local POIs, Confluence Points and Geocaches  Returning to Perth on day four.

 May/June Long Weekend - Coalseam Conservation Park    31 May - 2 June 2014
 

We will be traveling to Bindoon for m/tea and then up through Perenjori and back across to Coalseam NP stopping along the way to look at some points of interest.  Day 2 we will have a look around the Park and then follow the Stock Route to Tallering Gorge and then return to the Park.

September - Last Campfire Escape    27 - 29 Sept 2014

 

Exploring Wellington National Park and surrounding forests and waterways.
 
We will  be free bush-camping (no facilities) in a static camp for two nights. Rendezvousing with trip hosts at Boyanup on Saturday morning (where a country style morning tea will be provided – fresh home cooked scones, jam, cream etc. yum!).

October - Wheatbelt Wanderings    11 - 12 Oct 2014

 

We'll travel east to view a bit of history and some amazing granite outcrops. We'll have a communal breakfast on the Sunday. Campers will be okay but a couple of the spots we plan to call in at you may need to park away a bit and walk in.  Approx 500kms.

October - Following in the footsteps of the ANZACs    18 - 19 Oct 2014

 

In light of the 100th Anniversary of the First World War, we have the opportunity to head up Geraldton way to visit a farm where they have built 135m of authentic World War 1 Gallipoli trench in a paddock.
 
Members of the 11th Battalion AIF Commemorative History Group & Trench Project will be on hand to tell us about how Brigadier Leane and his men from the 11th Battalion stormed the trench and took it from the Turks.
 
The trench is on private land and is not normally open to the public for viewing. We have been given special permission to visit it. We will need trip numbers as soon as possible to assist the History Group with the planning of the event.

November - Wandoo National Park     16 Nov 2014

Enjoy a delightful woodlands day ramble through the recently declared Wandoo National Park heading northish from the Brookton Highway to the Lakes - York Road, via old forestry roads and tracks - check out the fantastic wildflowers out and about late Spring with our Club enthusiasts.

Meal is $50 per head…Club contributing $25 per member.
Children TBA...   Non members pay full price.
Come along and enjoy a fabulous three course meal and be entertained with tunes from stars like Aretha Franklin and James Brown for a wonderful evening of Soul and Funk.

2013 Trips Calendar 

    February - Wedge Island Day Run     Sunday 17 February 2013

Travel to the seaside town of Lancelin where we will have morning tea and then head off through the dunes and onto the beach to Wedge Island.

 March - Coast, Caves and Lakes of the Midwest     Long Weekend   2 - 4 March 2013

This will be a ‘mixed bag’ of some stunning coastal scenery (North Head and other rocky sites), pristine salt lake country (Lake Leeman etc), Nature Reserves, some walking (for the 'fit' - sedate rambling for the 'not so...) and some caves including Stockyard Gully.

 April -  Ernest Giles Range in the Great Victoria  Desert    29 March to 14 April  2013

This trip is a follow up from the Easter 2012 trip to the same area. We will travel to the remote Ernest Giles Range via the Great Central Road past Cosmo Newberry. We will probably have two static camps; once we finish exploring one area we will move onto another part of the Range. Static camps will give us the opportunity to spend significant time in each area. We will try to locate features named by Frank Hann, art work if any, and will enjoy a pristine environment. This trip is not for the faint-hearted - vehicles will need to be fully self contained for two weeks and have high clearance. At least 1000 kms fuel range is mandatory as are two spare wheels, a spare tube or two, and a good stock of repair gear for the rubber bits on your vehicle. May - 4WD and Navigation Skills Weekend      Toodyay    4 - 5 May 2013 

Venue - 4X4 Park, Toodyay.  An educational, social weekend in a lovely environment 100 kms from Perth CBD. 4 wheel driving in steep rocky country as easy or difficult as you want to make it. 

A fun filled weekend of 4WD'ing, basic skills instruction in bush navigation, general 4WD instruction, radio techniques, with photography tips by an expert.  Schedule of activities to be finalised.

This will be a static camp - caravans and camper trailers welcome.

  May June - Beaufort Inlet area via the 4WD tracks     31 May - 3 June 2013

Exploring the Beaufort Inlet area via the 4WD tracks.  The terrain is undulating, rocky, sandy and there may be some mud holes dependant on weather.  Base camp will be at Miller's Point and camp fees are $7.50 per person / night. 

Camper trailers / caravans are welcome. Trip rating is Moderate.  Camp fires are a go.

September - Southern Adventure     28th - 30th September 2013

 September - Metal Detecting for Novices    28 Sept - 1 Oct 2013

For those that are interested learning about prospecting using metal detectors. This will be a four day trip into the the Goldfields with a three day static camp.

Numbers will be restricted. Those intending to prospect will require: a Miners Right, metal detector, small pick, compass or gps, whilstle, waterproof matches. 

This trip is for members only and/or visitors undertaking their second trip.

October - Rothsay Gold Mine and Camel Soak   19 - 20 Oct 2013

Travel the area around Rothsay, Camel Soak and John Forrest lookout. The wildflowers should be out in full force. Trailers permitted but drivers must be prepared to keep up at 100kph on the highway.

  November - Perth’s Banksia Woodlands between Bullsbrook and Yanchep   10 November 2013


This trip will be a scenic daytrip ramble through the banksia and mixed banksia-eucalypt woodlands immediately north of Gnangara plantations. We should see plenty of wildflowers and the trip will include a short, easy 700m walk to a high point for great views.

Meal is $49.90 per head…Club contributing $25 per member.
Children up to 12 years pay double their age ie. a 6 years pays $12.00, whilst a 12 year old pays $24.00. Children over 12 pay full price.
Non members pay full price.
